As we mentioned in our previous blog post, there are a lot of hidden heroes inside your home that not only make your life easier, but can even save your life. Today’s post will introduce you to the GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.
GFCIs provide a vital service. When they detect an imbalance in the electrical flow within a power outlet, they immediately cut – or interrupt – the electrical flow. This is an interruption that may very well save your life. The interruption happens less than a second after the imbalance is detected. Most electrical imbalances occur because of the introduction of water into the electrical circuit. For that reason, most building codes require that GFCIs are installed for any outlet within six feet of a water source like a sink, shower, or bathtub. It’s a very good idea to test your GFCIs regularly using the built-in testing features.
