In our last post, we focused on the proper and safe use of power strips. Continuing our theme of keeping devices that rely on electricity safe is the topic of surge protection. Surge protectors are a valuable tool to prevent damage to your electronics and appliances. Power surges can happen without warning, due to lightning strikes, faulty utility equipment, faulty wiring, or many other things. A surge protector diverts the excess voltage that comes from a power surge into the ground.
If you’re interested in protecting your electronics from power surges, there are plenty of options available. Some homeowners choose whole-home surge protection, and this can be a very strong defense. However, most whole-home surge protectors are required to be installed by a licensed electrician. Even if you have whole-home surge protection, it can be a good idea to also install a standalone unit that can cover your most valuable electronics.
