Many homeowners choose to have plenty of trees on their property. Some of these trees can seem to be unusually close to their home. Believe it or not, this choice is not always just for curb appeal. Having trees near your home can play a significant part in the cooling of the entire building. Not only does the shade from the tree provide a break from the harsh sun, but trees also produce water vapor, which can also be cooling. Depending on a few different variables, some homeowners have saved around 10% on their annual energy costs due to the decreased need for cooling.
However, as with anything, there are pros and cons. Some trees have invasive root systems which can damage a home’s foundation. Trees can also attract wood-boring insects, which may also decide to attack your home. Of course, there is the potential for falling branches or other damage that comes from similar issues.
